"Black Liberty", 8.5"x11", Hand Signed Limited PRINT, Edition 1/99
This “Black Liberty”, is a paper print copy of the original 10’ x 7.5’ tall mural-like painting depicting The Statue of Liberty with a fusion of the face of police brutality victim from Minneapolis, Minnesota, George Floyd. The troubling current events we find ourselves in are ever-changing our lives and calls for justice. His death in particular, touches me to the point that it has impacted my work as an artist. The painting features a hand-spray painted message in acrylic, “I can’t breathe!” atop of the inscription plate from the statue, “With silent lips. “Give me your tired, your poor, Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free…” by Emma Lazarus.
“This painting is a protest against the inequality of rights in the United States, in the treatment of people of color by the police and other authorities ... I created a visual symbol of resistance and of empowerment for people of color, not only in America, but globally,” says Jean-Antoine Norbert.
